Today is recognized as “Best Friend’s Day” in the United States. While each of us can readily think of someone that we call our ‘best friend,’ there is another choice that we should consider on this day.
Scripturally, the origins of the English word ‘friend’ is derived from the Hebrew “hetairos,” meaning a comrade, companion, and partner. In its singular form, this word is mentioned 52 times throughout the Bible. In John, chapter 15, Jesus teaches two valuable insights about friendship:
:13 “Greater love hath no man that this, that a man lay down his life for his friends,” and
:14 “You are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” (KJV)
First, Jesus did lay down His life for us in accordance with God’s plan to redeem mankind. Next, He calls us His friends when we choose to acknowledge and follow His teachings. God’s love for us compelled Him to sacrifice His only son, Jesus, so that we could enjoy the abundant life, realize our purpose, utilize our gifts to make this world a better place, and to influence others to do good. What greater friend is there?
